QLogic 5000 Series Fibre Channel Switches

QLogic 5000 Series FC SAN Switches

The QLogic 5000 series of Fibre Channel (FC) Storage Area Network (SAN) switches are highly expandable. So, while they start with as little as 8 ports in a single SAN switch, they are able to expand up to 4 port increments all the way up to 20 ports – in the same switch! Additionally, 4 Always-On-It 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) stacking ports are included in every switch, and by stacking up to 6 QLogic 5000 switches you can achieve up to 120 device ports within that single multi-switch stack. And better yet, that multi-switch stack can be managed as if it were a single switch by means of management tools including QuickTools Graphical User Interface (GUI) and Command Line Interface (CLI). Other advanced features of QLogic 5000 series switches include adaptive trunking, hardware-enforced zoning, non-disruptive codeload and activation, fabric security and I/O Stream Guard Registered State Change Notification (RSCN) suppressions.

Another advanced feature of QLogic 5000 series switches is their N Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) support, which allows them to support virtualized environments. While these features can be found in all QLogic 5000 series switches, there are two different models within the QLogic series: the 5800V and the 5208V. The key difference between the two QLogic 5000 series models are that the 5800V model features a single power supply, while the 5208V model features dual power supplies, and thus a higher level of availability. Additional similarities between the two models include that they both offer backwards compatibility as 8 Gbps SAN switches to work with both 4 Gbps and 2 Gbps ports. Also, both QLogic 5000 series models feature support for 20 Gbps Inter-Switch Links (ISLs), which means that the various stacking ports of these FC SAN switches are able to accommodate an increase in bandwidth demands if the change proves necessary.
