HP StorageWorks B-Series SAN Switches
HP StorageWorks B Series SAN Switches
As serious Storage Area Network (SAN) switches, the HP StorageWorks B-series is marked with a “B” for better, bonafide, brilliant, and heck, even bodacious (which was somehow, actually in my Microsoft Word dictionary). But actually, that’s all a B-oldfaced lie. In fact, the B in HP StorageWorks B Series SAN switches stands for Brocade, HP’s technology partner for this product line. But despite the disappointment over the B descriptors, this is great news since that means these HP SAN switches are built around the proven architecture of Brocade technology. As a result, the HP B-Series SAN switches offer some amazing capabilities including high availability, superior reliability and exceptional scalability. And offering 8 Gigabits per second (Gbps) Fibre Channel (FC) performance, the HP B series switches also includes switches that feature the less common performance of 1 Gbps Ethernet and 10 Gbps Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE).
There are 7 switches that are included in the HP B Series SAN switch product line, meaning that somewhere in this SAN series you will be able to find the right switch for your enterprise IT environment (and believe me, that holds true way more than it does when Match.com feeds you the same line). While many of the SAN switches within the B series share common characteristics, including protocol support for almost everything under the sun including Fibre Channel over Internet Protocol (FCIP), Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and more, they have many unique features and options that can turn them from a one-size-fits-all kind of switch to a customized fit for your data center. For instance, some of the SAN switches in the B series are equipped with on-demand ports with no down time, or hot-swappable, redundant components, with major differences most clearly shown through aggregated bandwidth with a range of 268 Gbps, to 512 Gbps, and even all the way up to 1,280 Gbps.
