Dell PowerVault MD1220

Dell PowerVault MD1220 » Vista IT Group

The term “Small Form Factor” always seems to me to spark a bit of a misconception. Small can be good, since it means space-efficient, but it can also seem bad, when it describes an expansion enclosure that you really want to get a lot of extra storage though. So hear me out, small form factor does not mean a small amount of storage – especially where the Dell PowerVault MD1220 expansion enclosure is concerned. In fact, Dell MD1220’s can provide up to 12 Terabytes (TB) of additional disk drive storage capacity with up to 24 2.5” hot-pluggable Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) at 7.2K, 10K or 15K RPM or SAS Solid State Drives (SDDs). 12 TB of additional direct-attach storage (DAS) storage capacity is no joke, and either is the vast array of RAID level support that Dell PowerVault MD1220 expansion enclosures provide, which include RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Since Dell PowerVault MD1220’s are “expansion” enclosures, then they must be “expanding” upon something else, right? Right. The Dell products for which Dell PowerVault MD1220 direct-attached storage expansion enclosures are designed to expand upon include Dell PowerEdge servers and Dell PowerVault storage arrays. Some examples of the many ways in which Dell MD1220’s provide performance enhancements for these two different types of Dell products is by offering a 35% increase in Input/Output Operations Per Second (IOPS) capability, allowing enterprise IT environments to better meet the needs of performance-intensive applications. In fact, a few of the many applications that Dell MD1220 arrays are particularly helpful to include web, database and email hosting applications. Not only improving on the IOPS performance, Dell MD1220’s also improve upon the energy efficiency of previous generations, since they feature the new technology of 80PLUS Silver Certified power supplies.
